Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS)

Updated August 2026

Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) refers to technologies that capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial sources or the atmosphere and either store it underground or use it in commercial or industrial processes. In Alberta, two common applications of CCUS are carbon capture and storage (CCS) and CO2-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR). CCS captures CO2 and stores it permanently in geological formations without further use. CO2-EOR injects captured CO2 into oil reservoirs to increase oil production while permanently storing a portion of the injected CO2 underground.

CO2 Sequestration in 2025

The amount of CO2 permanently sequestered by CCS decreased by 14% year-over-year to 0.9 million tonnes in 2025. The annual decline was due to upgrader maintenance. Since 2015, CCS injection facilities have permanently sequestered a cumulative total of 10.7 million tonnes of CO2.

Similar to 2024, 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 were permanently sequestered by CO2-EOR in 2025. Since 2020, CO2-EOR facilities have permanently sequestered 7.7 million tonnes of CO2.
